Student Laboratory Report 32 Section_ 32 Evaluation of Antiseptics and Disinfectants: The Filter Paper Disk Method A. Results 1. With a metric ruler, measure the zones of inhibition on all four plates, and record this information in the table below Zone of Inhibition (mm) DISINFECTANTIANTISEPTIC Staphylococcus aureus 3% Hydrogen peroxide 5% Lysol 5% Iodine 110 Bleach Mouthwash Betadine lsopropyl alcoho 2. Which chemical was the most effective for inhibiting the growth of S. aureus? Of P. aeruginosa? 3. Which chemical was the least effective for inhibiting the growth of S. aureus? Of P. aeruginosa? 4. What do your results indicate about the relative chemical resistances of these two species? B. Short-Answer Questions 1. Differentiate between antiseptic and disinfectant. Include examples of each in your answer. Indicate whether any chemicals can be used as both. 231Explanation / Answer
Most effective for inhibiting the growth of S.aureus and P.aeruginosa - Isopropyl Alcohol
Least effective for inhibiting the growth of S.aureus and P.aeruginosa - Mouthwash
Ethanol, Bleach and Phenolics are three kinds of disinfectants which have been widely used in common laboratories.
In this study, a compared experiment on these above chemicals efficiency was conducted against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa using paper disk method.
1.10 bleach, 3% Hydrogen peroxside, mouth wash, betdine, isopropyl, 5%iodine, 5% lysol were used on both organisms.
Ethenol concentration gave the highest effect on Staphylococcus aureus as compared with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, mouthwash gave less effect.
B - Differentiate - antiseptic and Disinfectant :
Antiseptics are used on living tissues and cells to destroy any types of infections or sepsis which may be living on the tissue.
Disinfectants are meant to destroy microorganisms which can infect nonliving objects.
Common antiseptics include mouthwash, cold sore, and yeast infection treatment creams.
Disinfectants are commonly found in household cleaning products for kitchens, bathrooms, and other commonly touched items where germs are found.
Phenol is use as a antiseptic and disinfectant.
