Answer in short answers please . Explain why the phosphorolysis of glycogen is more efficie for the glycolytic pathway ent than the hydrolysis of glycogen in mobilizing slucove 15. Describe the process of glycogen breakdown in muscle. Include a description of the structure of glycogen, the nature 16. Explain the biochemical basis of the human metabolic disorder called lactose intolerance. 17. The yeast used in brewing the alcoholic beverage beer can break down glucose either acrobically or anaerobically 18. Explain with words, diagrams, or structures why lactate accumulates in the blood during bursts of very vigorous of the breakdown reaction and the breakdown product, and the required enzyme(s). using alcoholic fermentation. Explain why beer is brewed under anaerobic conditions. exercise (such as a 100-meter dash).

Explanation / Answer

Q14:- Because phosphorlysis of glycogen provides activated glucose -1-phosphate that can be converted into glucose 6 phosphate which can enter into glycolysis thus no need to invest energy for glucose activation. Whereas hydrolysis of glycogen produce glucose for which ATP is required for activation.

Q15:-glycogen is acted upon glycogen phosphorylase to produce glucose 1 phosphate which is converted into glucose 6 phosphate by enzyme phosphoglucomutase. Which then enter through glycolysis to produce pyruvate then into lactate.

Q16:-Lactose intolerance refers to inability to digest milk sugar lactose a disaccharide due to deficiency of enzyme lactase. Intestine cannot absorb lactose directly it must first be broken down into monosaccharides glucose and galactose. The lactose is then acted upon by bacteria produce gases and cause diarrhoea etc.

Q17:- During vigorous exercise body needs excessive oxygen to oxidise food to get more energy for exercise. But body cannot get enough oxygen to cope up vigorous exercise energy needs this lack of oxygen diverts respiratory path from aerobic to anaerobic resulting in the formation of lactic acid that causes muscle fatigue .
