Question

The figure show the Otto Cycle. ( with more information than given in the problem) Paths A and C are adiabatic (Q=0), and paths B and D are constant volume (dV = 0) Consider the working substance of this engine to be an ideal gas. For each path, indicate on the chart whether the work done on the gas is positive, negative, or zero. Also indicate the sign of the net work for the entire cycle. Repeat for heat (Q) put into the gas, and the change of internal energy dE (internal) of the gas. Now, using positive, negative, or zero?

My guesses:

For A, work goes in and is positive, Q = 0, and dE(initernal) is positive.

For B, W = 0, heat goes out and is negative, dE is negative.

For C, W = goes in and is negative, Q =0, dE is negative.

For D, W=0, heat goes in and is positive, dE is positive.

These are guess. Could someone confirm?

Explanation / Answer

Q=work + change in E; For A, work goes in and is positive, Q = 0, and dE(initernal) is positive;. For B, W = 0, heat goes in and is positive, dE is positive.; For C, W = goes out and is positive, Q =0, dE is negative.; For D, W=0, heat goes out and is negative, dE is negative.;
