Question

Part A:

Find the two locations where an object can be placed in front of a concave mirror with a radius of curvature of 44cm such that its image is twice its size.

Express your answers using two significant figures. Enter your answers numerically separated by a comma.

do1, do2 =___________cm

Part B:

In the case when the object is placed closer to the mirror, state whether the image is real or virtual, upright or inverted.

Part C:

In the case when the object is placed farther to the mirror, state whether the image is real or virtual, upright or inverted.

real upright virtual upright real inverted virtual inverted

Explanation / Answer

mirror formula; 1/v + 1/u = 1/f

f = R/2 = 22 cm.

For UPRIGHT image;

Magnification = -v/u = 2

==) v = -2u

==) -(1/2u) + 1/u = 1/f

==) 1/2u = 1/f

==) u = f/2 = 11 cm.

Since "v" and "u" have opposite signs the image formed is VIRTUAL.

For INVERTED image;

Magnification = -v/u = -2

==) v = 2u

==) 1/2u + 1/u = 1/f

==) 3/2u = 1/f

==) u = 3f/2 = 33 cm.

Since "v" and "u" have same signs the image formed is REAL.

A) 11 , 33 cm

B) when the object is closer to the mirror the image is VIRTUAL UPRIGHT.

C) when the object is farther to the mirror the image is REAL INVERTED.
