Question
Can someone help me work this out please? thanks!
A gymnast is performing a giant swing on the high bar. In a simplified model of the
giant swing, assume that the gymnast keeps his arms and body straight as he swings all
the way around the upper bar. Assume also that the gymnast does no work during the
swing. With what angular speed should he be moving at the bottom of the giant swing in
order to make it all the way around? The distance from the bar to his feet is 2.0 m and his
center of gravity is 1.0 m from his feet.
Explanation / Answer
hence center to center of mass distance is 1 m as he is standing
at top point mg =mv^/2r =
hence v= root g as r=1
hence at bottom balancing energy 0.5mv1^2 =mg*2 +0.5mv^2
0.5mv1^2 =mg*2 +0.5mg
v1 =root(17g) =12.91 m/s =velo at botom . ang speed =12.91 rad/s as r=1
