Question

In the diagram disk 1 has a moment of inertia of 4.0 kg

In the diagram disk 1 has a moment of inertia of 4.0 kg middot m2 and is rotating in the counterclockwise direction with an angular velocity of 6.1 rad/s about a frictionless rod passing through its center. A second disk rotating clockwise with an angular velocity of 9.5 rad/s falls from above onto disk 1. The two then rotate as one in the clockwise direction with an angular velocity of 2.8 rad/s. Assume there is no friction between the two disks. Determine the moment of inertia of disk 2.

Explanation / Answer

according to conservation of angular momentum

-4*6.1+ I*9.5 = (4+I)*2.8

I = 5.313 km*m^2

*****

disk 1 angular momentum = I1 * w1 = (-4*6.1)(since it is rotating in opposite direction)

Disk 2 angular momentum = I1*w2 = I*9.5

after contact

final angula momentum = (4+I)*2.8

since no external force so the angular momentum before nad after will be same
