Question

The diagram below shows two vectors, A and B, and their angles relative to the coordinate axes as indicated.
DATA: ?= 44.1o ?= 56.8o |A| = 3.3 cm. The vector A - B is parallel to the -x axis (points due West).

Calculate the y-component of vector B.

Calculate the x component of the vector A - B

Calculate the magnitude of the vector A + B.

The diagram below shows two vectors, A and B, and their angles relative to the coordinate axes as indicated. The vector A - B is parallel to the -x axis (points due West). Calculate the y-component of vector B. Calculate the x component of the vector A - B Calculate the magnitude of the vector A + B.

Explanation / Answer

a) since A - B is on -x axis

Ay - By = 0

By = Ay = 3.3*sin(44.1 degrees)=2.30 cm

b) so By = B*cos(56.8)

B = 2.3/cos(56.8 degrees)= 4.2 cm

so Ax -Bx = -3.3*cos(44.1 degrees) - 4.2*sin(56.8 degrees)=-5.88 cm

c) x components

Ax + Bx = 3.3*cos(44.1 degrees) - 4.2*sin(56.8 degrees)=-1.14 cm

Ay + By = 2*Ay = 4.6 cm

mag = sqrt(1.14^2 + 4.6^2)=4.74 cm
