Question

An engineer is designing a runway for a new airport. Of the planes which will use

the airport, the lowest acceleration rate will be 3 m/s2. The takeoff speed of this

plane will be 65 m/s.

a) Assuming the minimum acceleration, what is the minimum allowed length for

the runway?

b) The runway is constructed to 150% of the minimum allowed length. An

airplane accelerates down the new runway at 3.2 m/s2 for 25.5 s until it finally

lifts off. Determine the distance traveled by the airplane before takeoff, and

the distance between the airplane

Explanation / Answer

a) for minimum length

a = 3 m/s2

v = 65 m/s

u = 0

so 65^2 = 2*3* s

=> s = 65^2 /6 = 704.17 m

b) length of runway = 1.5*704.17 = 1056.255 m

a = 3.2 m/s2

t = 25.5 s

distance travelled = 0.5 * 3.2 *25.5^2 = 1040.4 m
