Question

Following question is about finding the capacitance and resistance of two sheets. of equal size.

The two sheets of equal size of 1*1 cm^2 are 2 micro-meter apart. Half of the space between the two planes (The surface is divided in half or side by side) Filled with dielectric of e(rl) = 10 and sigma1=2*10^-11 . The other half is filled with a dielectric e (r2) =30 and sigma2=5*10^-12. Find the capacitance and resistance of each half and the combined ones. Repeat the question if the thickness between the two sheets is divided in half and the surface is 1*1 cm^2 for both top and bottom sheets.

Explanation / Answer

a)

Since the capacitor are connected in parallel hence;

Ceq=C1+C2

where;

C1=(e(r1)*A*epsilon)/2d                 'd' is the distance betwwen the plates and 'A' is the area of the pates

C2=(e(r2)*A*epsilon)/2d

so

Ceq=(A*epsilon)/2d) *(e(r1)+e(r2))=9.735nF

b)

Now capacitors are connected in series hencce;

Ceq=C1*C2/C1+C2=(e(r1)*e(r2)*(A*epsilon)/2d)) /(e(r1)+e(r2))=7.30125nF
