Explanation / Answer

Tropical Rain Forest

Tropical Dry Forest

Tropical Savanna

Desert

Temperate Grassland

Description

These are forests occurring in tropical regions of heavy rainfall. These are the most productive and most complex ecosystems on earth

Long dry seasons each year and receive several 100cm’s of rainfall. It is also known as tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forest biome.

It has alternate wet and dry seasons, but considerably less annual rainfall, floods and droughts are common and no distinct rainy season

Regions where evaporation exceeds precipitation

This is a type of grassland biome. Also called as steppes or praires

Abiotic Factors

Mean monthly temperatures exceed 18 °C (64 °F)and average annual rainfall is not less than 168 cm

Temperatures are high throughout the year. Evapotranspiration exceeds precipitation in this dry forest.

Mean annual rainfall ranges from 80-160cm.

Mean annual temperature is greater than 18C. Prevailing winds are trade winds

Annual precipitation less than 25cm,average summer temperature is high around 30C.

Warm to hot season i.e. climate is semi-arid to semi-humid

Dominant plant life

Shrubs, herbs, small trees, and tall, broad-leaved evergreen trees are present. Also epiphytes (orchids, bromeliads, mosses and lichens) are present.

Mainly deciduous trees

Mainly tall grass and short trees. Trees are deciduous. Grasslands are called as ‘bush-veld’.

Xerophytic or drought resistant vegetation, trees are rare only date palms

Mainly grass and shrubs also small trees

Dominant Wildlife

reptiles, amphibians, ,insects, insects, apes, small mammals

Wildlife’s including monkeys, deer, large cats, parrots, rodents, ground dwelling birds and mammals

Grass eating herbivorous animals(zebra, giraffe, deer, elephant) and flesh eating carnivorous animals(lion, tiger, leopard, hyena, panther) are common

Snakes,   African wild dog, bats

Large mammals, birds, reptiles

Geographical Distributions

Located around and near the equator and rarely extend more than 10 degrees north or south of the equator.

Located at tropical and subtropical latitudes i.e. between 10° and 20°N and S latitude’s

Confined within tropics and best developed in Sudan. It is found between the equatorial rainforests and hot deserts.

Located on western coasts of continents between 15 and 30N and S

Located above the equator in northern hemisphere

Temperate Woodland and Shrubland

Temperate Forest

Northwest Coniferous Forest

Boreal Forest

Tundra

Description

It has similarities with desert biome but unlike desert it gets good amount of rainfall

These are typical coniferous forests occur along the west of North America from central California to Alaska

Dense and heavy forest cover with many lakes and high productivity

Known as Taiga also, and seen only in the northern hemisphere

It’s a simple biome but with harsh climate (extremely low) there are mainly two categories, Alpine tundra and Arctic tundra

Abiotic Factors

Hot and dry summers , good rain Fall and winter rain also

Characterized by heavy precipitation and humidity. Warm conditions, with mild winter.

There is wide variation in temperatures , precipitation also varies

Short and warm reaching 20-25 °C whereas winters are long and harsh, always 30-40 °C below freezing

The winter is lengthy and severe with lowest temperature around -340c, summer is shorter and temperature comes up to 120c. Precipitation is also low.

Dominant Plant Life

small thorny trees and shrubs

Corniferous trees along with birches, alder and aspen, mosses and lichens form on ground

Black spruce, white spruce, tamarack etc.

Tamarack Spruce, fir, pine are main types

Vegetation consists of ericaceous shrubs, flowering herbs, lichens, mosses and grasses

Dominant Wildlife

Mainly jack rabbits, kangaroo rats, mule deer

Main mammals are, snowshoe hare, varying hare, red squirrel, lemming, vole, wolf, deer, chipmunks,

Mainly moose, deer, reindeer or caribou, mice and squirrels

Important mammals are elk, moose, woodland caribou, grizzly and black bears and many bird species also there

Muskox, arctic hare, arctic ground squirrel, vole these are the main herbivores, whereas wolf, arctic fox, weasels are main carnivores

Geographical Distributions

Found in Chile,Mexico, California some parts of Australia and A frica

Spreads across Europe and Australia, China

Cover Canada completely and Alaska

Seen mainly in Canada, northern parts of Eurasia. Absent in Southern hemisphere

Seen in regions south of Antartic circle and north of Arctic circle. Arctic tundra spreads across northern America, northen Europe and Siberia. Alpine tundra is mainly Tibetan plateau and Himalayan mountains
