Ch. 13 Worksheet (10pts) Selecting a Dietary Assessment Method For each of the case situations listed below, select one of the following methods of dietary assessment. Give your rationale for the method selected, and, if appropriate, clarify how you might modify the method 24-hour recall Food frequency questionnaire Food record Direct observation Cases: Marisa is a 15-year-old who is five months pregnant, and who is being followed in the adolescent pregnancy clinic. She is from a lower-income economic background and has poor literacy skills 1. 2. Jacob is a 3-year-old male who was recently diagnosed with iron-deficiency anemia. His mother has brought him for a well-child visit and is very concerned about his poor intake. She states that his appetite varies considerably from day to day. Some days his intake is very poor, and other days he eats much more. She has asked the nurse for ideas on how she can improve his diet. 3. Mrs. Elkins is a 78-year-old woman with a history of diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension. Her HbAz is 8.3%. Her husband recently passed away and she now lives alone and prepares all of her own meals. She has asked the dietician for some ideas on how she can improve her diet to bring her blood sugar under better control. She admits that she has a "sweet tooth." She states that her short- term memory is poor and she has to write notes to herself as reminders 4. Susan is a nurse in a geriatric practice, and would like to develop a nutritional educational program to improve her patients' intake of fruits and vegetables. However, she needs some baseline information on their usual patterns of dietary intake. She is looking for an efficient way to assess the intake of most of her patients as a group. 5. Gerry is a 35-year-old male suffering from 2nd and 3rd degree burns over 30% of his body. He was recently transferred from the ICU to the burn unit and started on a regular diet. There is a need to assess his dietary intake to determine if he is meeting his caloric needs.Explanation / Answer
case 1....24 hour recall is the best method as it has certain advantages in this situation,,,,1. Does not require literate population as in this case, 2...it quantified the proper intake of the food. 3.. it can conduct any time without prior notification as in this case a single visit is enough
case 2....best method is food record on basis of few points....1 .it allows self-monitoring so a mother can properly watch for her 3 yr old boy.and it leads to proper diatory care and selection of food. 2...Can alter eating behaviors pattern so which can be helpful in this case as this boy having irregular eating habbits.
case 3....best method is food record as it has having some basic advantages over other methods ..like...it Does not require recall as in this case old lady having poorshort term memory. 2nd advantage....it allows self-monitoring so it is a good for a lone lady who prepare her own food..3rd advantage...Intake is easily quantified so patient can maintain their own charting and follow the protocol.
case 4...Food Frequency Questionnaire is to be best method as of its advantage over other methods in studing a large group with less staff for supervisor and it also provides habitual intake information without altering eating behaviors.
case 5... Direct observation method is preferred as the person is as patient and he is having 2nd and 3rd degree burn.and admitted in hospital so mostly on proper IV fluids which contain some amount of calories along with antibiotics support ....so his proper diatory monitering is based on his DIRECT OBSERVATION....
as per your point that if appropriate..about method modification so it comes under bias whice varies with subject ... mine is different form yours...
