Question
May you please explain the answers to the following question with support from concepts?
This course is called “Ecology and Evolution”. How does ecology drive evolution? How does evolution influence ecology?
What is a scientific theory? How are quantitative models used to advance scientific theory? Pick either the HW law or the exponential growth equation and explain how variations of the model have been used to advance evolutionary and/or ecological theory.
Evaluate “survival of the fittest” as a definition of natural selection and biological evolution. Why is this an unsatisfactory definition?
Various concepts have been proposed for things such as populations, species, niches, and communities. Why are these sorts of questions ultimately philosophical (esp. metaphysical) rather than biological? In formulating your response, use (at least) one of the above concepts as an example.
Evaluate “accumulated history” as a definition of biological evolution. How does this definition compare to other definitions that were presented in the course? In your response, be sure to incorporate some discussion of the concept of exaptation, as well as the importance of historical contingency in micro and macroevolution.
Explanation / Answer
How does ecology drive evolution?
Evolution is important to understand the interactions within the field of ecology.
Ecology- It is defined as the study of relatonships of organisms to their environment.
Evolution- It is defined as the change that happens in the characteristics , physical changes and behaviour of living beings through time and generations.
Ecology and evolutions relates each other as the organisms response to the ecology and environment may be evolutionary. Ecology studies how certain species interact with their environment and the cause of change in their increase or decrease or population levels. It is often said that without ecology , there cannot be evolution and without evolution there can be no life.
Environment acts as a filter for organisms which are best adapted to a niche or environment.
SCIENTIFIC THEORY
It is an explanation of an aspect of the natural world that can be repetedly tested, according to the scientific method, using an observation and experiment.
SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST
It is originated from the Darwinian evolutionary theory for decribing the natural selection. It is one of the most important concepts and organizing principles of modern biology. The differential survival of individuals that are more fit , genetically heritable it is believed to be one of the most important mechanism of evolution.
