PartIV Data Analysis and Interpretation Three years later, the results come in from the research team. They have written up their findings in a report to BPI, and your Science Director now asks you to evaluate some of their findings. Below are a series of figures from the study in Jamaica. Questions follow each figure for your interpretation 30 29 28 -Low 95% Mean -High 95% 23 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 Forest Agriculture Bauxite Figure 3. Richness of resident birds in forest patches by landscape matrix type. Bird richness was estimated based on Chao1 estimator, which adjusts for bias due to missed species (Chao 1984). Means and 95% credible intervals are provided based on linear mixed models. 8. How does overall species richness vary by landscape matrix type (use the credible intervals as an indicator of statistical significance)? Does this match with what you would have expected? Is overall richness the best response variable to consider?

Explanation / Answer

Mean of the richness of resident birds varies in forest and agricultural lands, but the standard deviations are big. The lower standard deviation of the agriculture region has crossed the upper standard deviation of the forest region. So, the difference can not be considered significant. The same is the case with difference of the forest region, with peri-urban and Bauxite. However, there are significant differences in the number of resident birds of the agriculture region and peri-urban region and also that of the agriculture region and Bauxite region. The mean of resident birds of peri-urban region and Bauxite region are quite close to each other.

What was expected before the experiment by those who have performed it, is not known to us. However, it is expected in general that the richess of resident birds would vary significantly in forest with peri-urban region and also that of forest with Bauxite region, but it can be seen from the graph that this not the case. Significant difference of resident birds in agricultural region with peri-urban region and Bauxite region is as expected.
