Question
I hope I can find someone to help with this problem. I've asked two people on Chegg and one in-person and nobody's been able to figure this out. $10,828 is not the right answer; neither is subtracting NOPBT - (Tax expense + tax shield)

Explanation / Answer
Solution:
Net Operating Profit After Tax (NOPAT)
Net Operating Profit after tax means Profit generated from operating activities after tax.
NOPAT = Net Income – after tax Non-Operating Gains/Losses + after tax interest expenses
This can be calculated by following table form:
Net Income (given)
$13,064
Less: Non-Operating Gains after taxes [($117 + $231) x (1 – 0.37)]
($219.24)
Add: Interest Expenses after taxes [$109 x (1 – 0.37)]
$68.67
Net Operating Profit After Tax
$12,913.43
Why this calculation:
- NOPAT is the Operating income of business after taxes.
- Since in the question tax expenses already deducted in Net Income. In business tax expenses is depend upon the taxability of company / firm. It may be possible that this tax expenses have deferred tax adjustment or DLA adjustment. That is why it is not correct if we calculated operating profit in simple way.
- That is the reason we have taken Net Income as base and Federal Income taxes rate 37% for calculating NOPAT.
Net Income (given)
$13,064
Less: Non-Operating Gains after taxes [($117 + $231) x (1 – 0.37)]
($219.24)
Add: Interest Expenses after taxes [$109 x (1 – 0.37)]
$68.67
Net Operating Profit After Tax
$12,913.43
