Question

Please solve the SECOND PART of the question (the highlighted part). If you want to solve the first feel free but I want the answer for the highlighted part. Thank you!

5.) (20 points) You buy an older house (100 years old or so) and it has a great basement office and workshop where you spend most of your time on the weekend. The problem is the older oil-heat furnace that is no longer efficient. The ceiling is low (only 2.5m) and the room is 80m2. You have some windows and some drafts that exchange the air at a rate of 0.3 air changes per hour (ach). The furnace emits carbon monoxide (CO) at a rate of 5700mg/hour. What is the steady state concentration of CO assuming it is conservative and the furnace is the only source (i.e. -no ambient CO in the basement?) Also, what percentage of your blood's hemoglobin is binding CO instead of O2 (what is the %COHb after you have been working in the basement for 8 hours?)

Explanation / Answer

Carboxyhemoglobin is a stable complex of Carbon monoxide and Hemoglobin.Carbonmonoxide binds to the position as the sames sites as that of oxygen but 200 times more tightly.it cannnot be released as like as oxygen. The slow release of carbon monoxide causes an accumulation of CO bound hemoglobin molecules as exposure to carbon monoxide continues and because of this fewer hemoglobin particles are available to bind and relese oxygen. Thus causes gradual suffocation and causes carbon monoxide poisoning.

conversion of Hb to COHb is called Carboxy hemoglobinemia. and it increases the riskof forming clots in the blood.COHb hs a half life period in blood upto4-6hours.

the percentage of COHb after working in a basement for 8 hours or after 8hours exposure will be 10mg/m3(8.7ppm)
