In 1880 five aboriginal trackers were each promised the equivalent of 100 Australian dollars for help to capture the notorious outlaw Ned Kelley. In 2002 the granddaughters of two of the trackers claimed that this reward had not been paid. The prime minister stated that if this was true, the government would be happy to pay the $100. However, the granddaughters also claimed that they were entitled to compound interest. A) How much was each granddaughter entitled to if the interest rate was 3% (Do not round intermediate calculations. Round your answer to 2 deciamal places. B) How much was each entitled to if the interest rate was 6%?
Explanation / Answer
Solution :-
The Principal amount she is entitled is $100
and the rate of interest is 3%
the time = 2002 - 1880 = 122 years - (t)
The amount that she is entitled with rate 3% is
P*(1+r)t = 100*(1+0.03)122 = 100*36.82 = 3682 $
And if the interest rate is 6% the amount for which she is entitles is
P*(1+r)t = 100*(1+0.06)122 = 100*1222.69 = 122269 $
