Question
Corporations often spend more money on advertising than they do on environmental control. Environmentalists believes this fuels a “culture of waste” leading to heavy use of energy and other resources. People with money are enticed to buy unneeded products – more clothes, another car or TV, a new product to replace one that still works, or second homes. (a) What does the word sustainability mean to you? (b) Is consumerism compatible with sustainability? Explain. A minimum of 75 words (excluding the original question words) is required and a maximum of 125 words (excluding the original question words) must not be exceeded.
Explanation / Answer
Sustainability is a word which has no certain definition, but in my opinion it means fulfilling our requirements from the environment without damaging or depleting the natural resources available, and also maintaining an ecological balance. when our needs are not fulfilled with a sustainable range it is then, termed as over exploitation of the environment.
today the time has changed and consumerism is no more compatible with sustainability, the corporations aims growth with no compromise. they need more and more people as their customers to buy their products, and in order to cover large number of customers there need to huge production of items which is not possible in a sustainable range.
when people even thought of maintaining value of nature and use the same product for a long time such as furnitures, cars, electronic items etc , the companies come up with some upgraded items, smartphones ,high speed cars, high tech apartments, stylish furnitures and the consumers are attracted towards these offers . so these actions motivate the corporations to manufacture more and unnecessarily raw materials are extracted from the environment and loosing the balance of nature. in some way we are responsible for the expolitation of the environment. but its natural with time our requirements change and fulfill that we need new and upgraded things to use.
so,consumerism is not compatible with sustainability.
