Question

Answer part (a) below, then use Earth's magnetic field maps provided (intensity, inclination, declination) to answer parts (b), (c), and (d). 2. Briefly describe the different sources of geomagnetism, and their relative significance in terms of the total geomagnetic field intensity. a) b) Fill out the table below Describe any trends you see in the tabulated data (or simply from inspecting the maps) with respect to changing latitude and/or longitude. What general conclusion can you draw about geomagnetic field inclination with respect to latitude? How does this match (or not) what you would expect based on the dipole model for the magnetic field? Use sketches as necessary to ilstrate your c) d) answer. (25 marks) Latitude LongitudeIntensity (nT) Inclination Declinatio 30° S 00 N 60° S 45° N 120° E 50° E 70° W 600 W

Explanation / Answer

a) Different sources of geomagnetism:

1:Dipole magnetic field- It constitutes the most significant part of the magnetic field upto 85% of total magnetic field.it is formed by the earths rotating dynamo(core) and act as an dipole magnet which has N & S pole called geomagnetic poles .

2:Nondipole magnetic field-it is constituting the rest of the magnetic field about 15% . it is formed by various mechanisms like local magnetic field, charged solar flares interaction with atmosphere . it causes the variation in the vertical component of magnetic pole .
