Problem 3 (9 points) 12 min The 1973 Endangered Species Act (ESA) is a law protecting species at risk of extinction. However, the process can be rather lengthy, requiring first that a species be petitioned before it can even be officially considered for protection. A recent study examined all species receiving ESA protection since 1973. The modified boxplot on the right describes the 547 species that were involved in a lawsuit, splitting the overall time spent in petition into a time before and a time after the lawsuit. 30 20 a) Three quarters of the species in this graph had already spent at least roughly 10-11 years in the petition stage before a lawsuit was filed b) For the species on this graph, the median time spent in petition after a lawsuit was filed is roughly 2-3 years. 10 c) The distribution of time spent in petition after a lawsuit was filed for these species is A) right-skewed, no outliers C) left-skewed, no outliers E) symmetric, no outliers B) right-skewed with outliers D) left-skewed with outliers F) symmetric with outliers d) Can we conclude that filing a lawsuit helps shorten the time a species spends in the petition stage? Briefly explain why or why not. No, we can't. [Either one of the following two explanations is sufficient for credit.] The time spent after a lawsuit is obviously shorter than the time spent before it, but we don't know how long the petition process takes without a lawsuit (so how would we know if it is shorter?). Also, the data are not an experiment, therefore we cannot conclude causation. Before After

Explanation / Answer

Was there multiple options to this question, and one of those options was 10-11 years?

Three quarter of species is referring to Quartile 3.  Quartile 3 from the boxplot to the left is represented by upper 'lid' of the box , which is much beyond the 10 mark. hence, spent is alteast 10-11 years
