Question

Information about travelers:
40% check work email.
30% use cell phone to stay connected to work.
25% bring laptop.
23% check email and use cell phone.
51% neither check work email nor use a cell phone nor bring alaptop.
In addition, 88 out of every 100 who bring a laptop also check workemail.
70 out of every 100 who use a cell phone also bring a laptop.

a) What is the probability that a randomly selected traveler whochecks work email also uses a cell phone to stay connected?
I got 0.575 for this part.

b) What is the probability that someone who brings a laptop onvacation also uses a cell phone to stay connected?
I tried P(cell phone|laptop) = .70/.25 but that obviously doesn'twork. I don't know how to find how much of the 25% that bring alaptop also use a cell phone.

c) If the randomly selected traveler checked work email and broughta laptop, what is the probability that he/she uses a cell phone tostay connected?

Thank you.

Explanation / Answer

a) P(email/cellphone)=P(Email and cell phone)/P(cellphone)                            = 0.23/0.30                            = 0.77. b) P(cell phone and lap top)=P(cell phone/lap top).P(laptop)                                = 0.70(0.25                                 =0.175. c) Hint: P(B)=P((AUC) and B)/P(AUC/B)
