Nominal:
A nominal variable has no imposed order.It represents a name or category. Taking an average does notmake sense at all. The numbers have no meaning. They are justfor coding.
Examples:
1 = Red, 2 = Blue, 3= Green, 4 = Yellow
1 = African Am, 2 = Asian Am, 3= Caucasian Am, 4 = Latino Am, 5 =Native Am

Ordinal:
There is an order to the response. However, thedifference between 1 and 2 may not have the same meaning as 2 to 3.In general, taking an average would not be useful.
Example:
1 = Not helpful, 2 = Somewhat helpful, 3= Helpful, 4 =Lifesaver
