Question 013
Which one of the following would NOT be a likely effect of a breakwater built out in front of an open-ocean shoreline?
Dissipation and/or reflection of wave energy on the seaward side of the breakwater.
Decreased longshore current velocities between the breakwater and the beach.
Increased wave action and erosion of the beach behind (landward side) the breakwater.
Quieter waters behind (landward side) the breakwater.
Explanation / Answer
Answer : Increased wave action and erosion of the beach behind (landward side) the breakwater.
At shallow waters the gently sloping of beach protected by small structres are called break water. Break waters reducce the erosion by reducing tahe wave action in shore water and provde safe harbourage. Accretion of sediments encouraged by dissipation and/or reflection of wave energy on the seaward side of the breakwater.
