Question

Tong and Phillip are working as counselors in a day camp for kids. One of their tasks is to prepare lemonade for snack break. In the camp's recipe box they find three recipes for making lemonade from concentrate:

Recipe A 2 cups concentrate 3 cups cold water

Recipe B 4 cups concentrate 8 cups cold water

Recipe C 3 cups concentrate 5 cups cold water

Which recipe will make juice that is the most lemony tasting? Explain in detail how you decided.

Assume that each of the 240 campers gets 1/2 cup of lemonade. Calculate how much concentrate and how much water are needed for each of the three recipes. Explain in detail your method of calculation.

Explanation / Answer

1.

the juice will be more tasty if amount of concentrate will be higher,

In Recipe A:

Amount of concentrate = 2/(2 + 3) = 2/5 = 0.4 Or 40%

In Recipe B:

Amount of concentrate = 4/(4 + 8) = 4/12 = 0.3333 Or 33.33%

In Recipe C:

Amount of concentrate = 3/(5 + 3) = 3/8 = 0.375 Or 37.5%

So Recipe A will be most lemony tasting.

2.

Total campers = 240 campers

each camper will get 1/2 cup of lemonade,

Total cups of lemonade needed = 240*(1/2) = 120 cups,

Now amount of Concentrate = 40% of 120 = 48 Cups

Amount of water = 60% of 120 = 72 cups
