Question
I think that you make a good point with introducing the media aspect to this. I think in many situations the media is going to put out statistical information that will cause a reaction in both sides of the situation. Word of mouth versus statistical information can be weighed very differently at times. When it comes to accurate statistics, information from word of mouth does not give us very accurate information. It gives us enough information to get an idea. Which is what most people feed off. What do you think?
Explanation / Answer
yes, i believe that word of mouth is incapable of providing the essential detail when compared to statistics about an event. And sometimes news spread via 'word of mouth' could be dangerous and can casue potential damage to society and people associated with the news both emotionally and physically.
I will back my above statement with a recent protest that took place in India against the release of the movie 'Padmavat'. The protest was lead by Karni sena against the movie and the director Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
**A short description about the movie Padmavat-. Based on the epic poem Padmavat (1540) by Malik Muhammad Jayasi, the film narrates the story of Padmavati, a Rajput queen who committed jauhar (self-immolation) to protect herself from Allaudin Khilji.**
The main reason for the protest is the 'believe' that the director had distorted the history. Karni Sena and other Rajput community leaders are protesting against the film over alleged distortion of historical facts which they are just assuming(probably because of word of mouth) without seeing the actual movie (Stats).
however the protest came to an end with one of the group leaders wached the movie ,realising that there was no distortion with history rather they came out stating that the courage and sacrifice of the Rajputs have been showcased in the movie.
so above is the perfect example to prove that word of mouth is just might not be enough to provide the actual information compared to stats.
