Question
I think my teacher just lost his mind and give us an assignment that has like 20 assignments on it, and they are like the one I am posting. So, I need help with a few or at least just a start because he gave us 2 days and like I said this assignment has like 10 short essays..
Thanks
Do some Internet research on flow control in data communications networks. Identify common examples of why flow control is needed and how it is used to ensure reliable data transfer between senders and receivers. Summarize your findings in a 250–500 word paper
Explanation / Answer
Flow rate is a data link layer process which is used to manage data transfer between two computers i.e it makes data transfer possible between computers of different speed without the loss of any data. It makes sure that server that has high speed and high processing power does not overwhelm the source computer such as personal computer which has low speed and low processing power.that a transmitting station, such as a server with higher processing capability, does not overwhelm a receiving station, such as a desktop system, with lesser processing capability so that transmission occur in a controlled manner.
Flow Control is a set of rules by which it let the sender know how much sender can transmit before till server receives acknowledgment from the receiver. It does not allow sender to overwhelm the receiver. Also the receiver should inform the sender before the while memory or processing power of receiver is consumed and let the sender know that it should send less frames.
There are two main methods for flow control: Stop-and-wait
It is also known as Request/reply, here sender sends a frame and then receiver tells the sender whether or not it wants for more frames by sending an acknowledgement and sender waits for the acknowledgement before sending anymore frames.
Sliding window
It is used in TCP connection and here, instead of one frame multiple sequentially numbered frames of a certain range are sent to utilize the bandwidth and increase the efficiency of the network. After receiving the frames the receiver sends ACK of receiver frames and tells if it wants more frames or not.
