Question

I. Short-Answers. (1) Critical thinking: (a) When you are given a frequency distribution table summarizing the weights of 120 quarters, is it possible to identify the original list of the 120 individual weights? Why? or why not? (b) When trying to better understand a large data set, what is the advantage of examining the histogran instead of the frequency distribution? (c) The population of ages at inauguratiion of all US Presidents who had professions in the military is 62,46, 68,61,57. Why does it not make sense to constructa histogram for this data set? (d) When comparing two data sets, why is it generally better to use relative fre quency instead of frequency distribution? (c) American Online (AOL) occasionally conduct online polls in which internet users can respond a question. If a graph is constructed to illustrate results from such a poll, and the graph is designed the graph provide us with understanding of the greater population? Why or why not?

Explanation / Answer

a) Yes when we are given frequencies for weights then it is possible to identify individual weights
for eg if we know that the frequency is 5 for people with 80kgs weight
so we know that all the individuals would have individual weights as 80

b)
Histogram gives us a distribution of the data for the large data set and tells us what is the overall shape of the large data. it helps us summarise the large dat aby looking at the shape of the distribtion. the same is not true for frequency distribution as we would not create bins in frequency distribtion

c)
The values are very less ,hence a histogram might not give a good meaningful information about the data

d)
relative frequencies basically tells us the percentage contribution of 1 kind of data with respect to the other. This tells us how more or less 1 type of data is wrt other type of data. hence the comparison between the 2 data sets becomes easy
