Question
Answer the following question. Please show all your working.
Your boss has asked you to collect data on how much time people watch TV (so your company can decide whether to invest in television advertising). He is curious whether people watch more than 5 hours of TV a day. You survey 500 people and calculate a sample mean of 5.1. You want to test the null hypothesis that people watch more than 5 hours of TV a day. Can you say whether or not you will reject the null hypothesis (without actually doing the calculations)? Explain your answer.
Explanation / Answer
Without actually doing the calculations, I won't be able to reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis.
This is due to the fact that neither the population standard deviation nor the sample standard deviation of the number of hours a person watched TV has been provided here.
Without either of these, I won't be able to calculate the test statistic and thus will not be able to calculate the p-value, which will help me in rejecting or not rejecting the null hypothesis.
