Question

Subject Education

Could I please get an example of how to develop an annual goal and a supporting objective for an IEP, based off this 3rd grade student's previous records, that includes a behavior, condition, and criterion?

"Both the teacher and parent rating scales showed that Tiffany’s inattention, distractibility, and hyperactivity/impulsivity were significantly elevated (see next table). She seemed most engaged in tasks that combined highinterest with movement."

" Tiffany’s reading remains below grade level (midyear second grade for independent reading). Her listening comprehension is much better and is on grade level. Her spelling is significantly below grade level (beginning second grade), but her speaking vocabulary is appropriate.

Math is also an area of concern. Tiffany has not been able to memorize her multiplication facts. She continues to invert fractions and cannot remember the rules of operations. She is better at hands-on math problem-solving, and her teachers have used math manipulative (multi-based arithmetic blocks, color rods, and number chips) with success.

Her teachers are concerned that her work is often messy, disorganized, and incomplete. They also feel that Tiffany is unable to retain information that she seemed to have mastered."

Explanation / Answer

So for Tiffany,

Annual Goals are like road map, as like road have cuts and curves goals also have fluctuations but the key thing is to stick to them.

Annual Goals should comprises of Positivity and should decribe the skills of the particular that can be Seen and Measured.

Keep asking the 5 wh family questions to yourself unless and until you find the perfect one i.e

What skills or behaviour a goal requires to be achieved..?

Who is going to achieve the Goal..?

How you are going to achieve your goal..?

Where are you applying the conditions..? (Either in right way or wrong way.)

When you are going to achieve your Goal..?

These are the most of what Tiffany should go for.

As from the previous record we get to know that Tiffany finds it difficult to read but listening is much better, this might be because she still has problem in joining alphabets written which makes a word and on the other hand it is always easy to listen.

Spelling is also under consideration because spelling a word is again joining the word but speaking vocabulary is upto the mark as speaking doesn't requires joining of alphabets.

It will be suitable for her to work on joining alphabets.. it will be key for her.

Mathematics is the area of practicing and because Tiffany finds it difficult she should adopt the habit of practicing.

Although writing goals can be one of the most challanging part of development of IEP i.e Individually Education Program and growth. Writing your goals daily in repitition manner will bring you close to your destination only a little effort is required hence. Goals generally cover every of your Intrest area. They can also target area of General Education Curriculum.
