Question

Confidence in institutions. A Gallup Poll (June 1-4, 2013) interviewed a random sample of 1529 adults (18 years or older). The people in the sample were asked about their level of confidence in a variety of institutions in the United.States. Here are the results for small and big businesses: What is the probability that a randomly chosen person has either no opinion, no confidence, or very little confidence in small businesses? Find the similar probability for big businesses. Using your answer from part (a), determine the probability that a randomly chosen person has at least some confidence in small businesses. Again based on part (a), find the similar probability for big businesses.

Explanation / Answer

a) probability of person has no opinion , no confidence or very little confidence in small businesses

Prob for small businesses= 0.07 + 0.00 + 0.01 = 0.08 = 8%

Prob for big businesses =0.31 + 0.02 + 0.02 = 0.35

b)
P( at least some confidence in small busineeses) = 1- P( no opinion, no confidence or very little ) = 1 - 0.08 = 0.92

P( at least some confidence in big business) = 1 - 0.35 = 0.65
