Question

After reliability development testing, the following times to failure were recorded on operational units: Estimate the population parameters for the following distributions: Beta and theta if T W(beta, theta) theta if T E(theta) mue and sigma if T N(mue, sigma) mue and sigma if T LN(mue, sigma) Using the estimates, Estimate the mean, median, standard deviation and the 10th percentile time to failure. Estimate and plot the probability density and distribution functions Determine which, if any, of the models provide a reasonable model. Provide comparisons and graphs to support your conclusion.

Explanation / Answer

For each of the distributions, we need to estimate the parameter values.

The four distributions are:

a) Weibull

b) Exponential

c) Normal

d) Log-normal

You can get online statistical calculators to estimate the parameters of the distribution as well as the statistical data that has been asked i.e 10 percentile values.

Essentially, what we are trying to do in this problem is, given that we have 10 values, we estimate a distribution of values that most accurately fits the given values. Fitting the distribution, helps in finding out the probability of a certain value.

Once the models have been fitted, they can then be compared.

Hope this helps
