Question
Miami is, mostly, laid out in a rectangular grid system just like the Cartesian Coordinate System. What is located at Miami's origin? Explain your answer. b. You live on the corner of 3^rd St and SW 9^th Ave and your cousin lives on the corner of 9^th St and NW 23^rd Ave. You decide that you need to meet exactly half-way so that each of you is spending the same on gas. You tell your cousin where to meet you but he does not believe it is half-way. Since you are taking this class you can prove it to him. Where did you tell him to meet you and how do you do prove it? Work/ Sketches:Explanation / Answer
7. a. Miami is the seat of Miami-Dade County which has been drawn on the grid model since the Great War.
The origin is the intersection of Miami Avenue and Flagler Street.
Every other location is numbered with respect to this origin.
For instance 3rd street SW 26th avenue means 3 South of Flagler Street and 26 west of Miami Avenue. In a Cartesian grid, this would be (-26,-3).
b. The two should meet at 3rd street NW 16th avenue. The proof is below:
3rd street and SW 9th avenue corresponds to (-9,-3). 9th street and NW 23rd avenue corresponds to (-23,9).
The mid point of (-9,-3) and (-23,9) is ([-9-23]/2,[-3+9]/2) or (-16,3).
This point corresponds to 3rd street NW 16th avenue.
