Question

May I please get help with this question please both a and b .. Thank you a A uranium nucleus contains 92 protons. What is the electrical potential at a distance of 1.0x10 10 m from the nucleus? What is the potential energy of an electron at this distance? b A proton (charge +e) moves in a straight line from a point A to a point B inside a linear accelerator, a total distance of 0.5 m. The electric field is uniform along this line and has a strength of 1.5x107 in the direction of A to B. Find: (a) The force on the proton (b) The work done on it by the field. (c) The potential difference VB VA

Explanation / Answer

a)

Potential at a given distance is given by :

V = k*q/r = 9*10^9*(92*1.6*10^-19)/(1*10^-10)

= 1.32*10^3 V

So, potential energy, U = Vq

= 1.32*10^3*92*1.6*10^-19

= 1.94*10^-14 J

b)

Force , F = E*q

= 1.5*10^7*1.6*10^-19

= 2.4*10^-12 N

Work done , W = F*d

= 2.4*10^-12*0.5

= 1.2*10^-12 J

Potential difference = -1.2*10^-12/(-1.6*10^-19)

= -7.6*10^6 V
