Question
Particle board is produced from the scrap after a tree has been milled into lumber. One sheet of particle board weighs 20 lbs., and an average house uses about ten sheets (cabinets, barriers, insulation, etc.). Woodpeckers cut down on the amount of this material available. Every hole they bore reduces the quantity of wood by two ounces. Assuming that all the holes went into the scrap used in the particle board production and the average woodpecker bores 15 holes per day for 3 years, how many woodpeckers would have to be exterminated to build a house?Explanation / Answer
Given
weight of 1 sheet = 20lbs
sheets require to build 1 average house = 10 sheets
thus weight of 1 average house will be = 10*20lbs = 200lbs
and due to wood peckers the hole reduces the quantity of wood by 2 ounces
average wood pecker bores hole 15holes per day for 3 years
therefore, 1year = 365 days
15holes * 365days = 5475 holes per year
5475holes * 3years = 16425holes (for three year)
thus
totall weight loss due to wood pecker for 3 year will be
2 ounces * 16425holes =32850 ounces
that is 2053 lbs wasted by wood peckers (approx) in 3 years
let us assume that 1hole bored is doen by 1 wood peeker
therefore,
we know that 1 average house weight is = 200lbs
thus
no of wood pecker exlimanted = .0625lbs*2*15*(3*365)/20lbs*10sheet
2053.125/200 = 10.265
that is approx 11
thus 11 woodpecker have to be exliminated
