Post three paragraphs to this week’s discussion: (working as an asset manager keeping inventory of a company) Explain how you use data – or summaries of data – every day. Consider how you provide data for others to use. Give two specific examples from your daily data, one numerical variable and one categorical variable. Describe the data that would be collected on each (such as the units of measure, integers or decimals, whether there’s a fixed number of categories or free response). Reflect on how the use of your example data impacts your life/work or that of others.
Explanation / Answer
Date is a big part of our life, we use date every day without even realize it. As the text book state “Statistics is the science of data” and we are constantly observing and analyze data around us. As Kyle mentioned a great example of employee list. That data shows when and where you got to be and the time of your shift and consist of bunch of data not only about you and your fellow co-workers.
One of the example to utilize data is when you are ordering supplies for your company. You will need accurate data to make sure you are ordering the right amount; these data include how often you use certain item. Are those item expendable, and the price of the items, how many people will be needing them etc., all there are data we need to collect before making the purchase. Another great example of data usage that could help to prevent crimes and increase security. Statistics such as race, ethnicity, age, sex, income bracket, unemployed rate all these are data that need to be collected to evaluate an area.
As a Homeland Security Major data and statistics are very important in this field. most of the agencies goal are to prevent something bad to happen. To reach this goal we will need to collect large amount of data and evaluate /analysis these data correctly to make the next move and stay ahead of any enemy.
