Question
Formulate a supplement for cattle so that it contains 41% crude protein (CP) on an as fed (AF) basis. Use soybean meal (45% CP, AF basis) and urea (286% CP, AF basis), and ground corn grain (9% CP, AF basis) as a carrier. To prevent the addition of too much urea (toxic amounts), lock in urea as a fixed ingredient at 10% of the supplement (AF basis). Also, 12% of the supplement as fed should be reserved for minerals (HINT: this is the MSE). What is the % soybean meal (AFB) needed in the supplement for it to contain 41% CP?
Explanation / Answer
Lets say there are x% of sybean meal and y% of urea and z% ground corn grain is putted.
MIneral should be 12% so x + y + z = 88....(i)
y <= 10
so what is x = ?
0.45x + 2.86 y + 0.09z = 41....(ii)
let we take maximum amount of urea y = 10
so that will change equation (i) and (ii)
x+ z = 78
45x + 9z = 1240
x= 269/18 = 14.94 %and z = 1135/18 = 63.05%
so there is around 15% soyabean mimeal needed to supplemented to contain 41% CP.
