This Lab is an extension of your homework for Chapter 3, where you work with percentages and

two-way tables, both of which are used in various ways in many facets of everyday life.

In Part 1 I will show you an example of how to use a given set of information to create a table, then answer various questions using those table values, and finish by writing the anwers in a complete sentence.

You will then be asked to answer some more questions using the same table, and then write the

numerical answers from your work in complete sentences to earn the credit for Part 1.

In Part 2 you will be asked to work through a similar exercise on your own, using a second set of

information. There will be some additional questions in Part 2 which will require you to analyze the

data a bit more thoroughly.

EXAMPLE

Creating and Analyzing a Two-Way Table

Suppose you called the Humane Society to adopt a puppy, and were told 20 puppies were available.

The person to whom you spoke said there were 8 white and 12 spotted puppies. When you said

that you were more interested in a female, you were informed that of the 9 female puppies, 5 were

white and 4 were spotted. We can use this information to create a two-way table which will

completely describe the possible puppy choices.

A two-way table gives information about two characteristics of the data set. From the given

information we know the gender (the puppies are either male or female), and the appearance

(either white or spotted). When you create a two-way table to display the data, you choose

one characteristic's possible values to label the interior rows of the table, and the other

characteristic's possible values to label the interior columns. The right-most column and the

bottom row give the totals for each value, and the overall total number of items (in this case, puppies)

is shown in the bottom right cell of the table.

My table is shown below, with the given information shown in bold. Note that we were

not told how many male puppies there were, or whether they were spotted or white. However,

we can easily calculate those values (shown in red in the table) by entering the given information into

the table, and then using the relationships between the known values and the unkown values to fill in

the blanks. In this first table I have added descriptions in parentheses to the numerical cell values to

make it very clear what each of the numbers represent.

This is not done in a standard two-way table. I just wanted to point out that the numbers on the

inside of the table represent two characteristics of the data, and the numbers in the exterior TOTAL

rows and columns represent only one characteristic of the data.

Next, let's use this table to answer the following questions:

Round all answers to the nearest tenth (one decimal place) as needed.

Note: for percentage answers, this means you will need to calculate the decimal form of the answer,

round the decimal answer to 3 decimal places if needed, and then convert from decimal form to

percentage form. When you write the numerical answer in a sentence, it is optional to write out the numbers in words. As you will see from my answers, this is typically not done for numbers which are not whole numbers.
