Question

Please answer both of the following questions (20 points each). Attached you find a crosstabular analysis testing the hypothesis that Democrats are more likely to support abortion rights than are Republicans. From this analysis. address the following a. Do the data support the hypothesis as do you know? Be me how you made this b. Determine whether the relationship is statistically significant and tell determination. Be sure to include in your answer the x critical value. c. Determine how strongly the independent and dependent variables are related, and tell me how you made this determination. 2) Attached you will find SPss output from a bivariate regression analysis (along with frequencies of the dependent and independent variables) testing the hypotheses that Republicans are more authoritarian (0 least authoritarian 7 most authoritarian) than Democrats. From this analysis, please answer the following a) Does the analysis support the hypotheses as stated? How do you know? b) Using the t-score, significance level (a 2 05), and confidence interval methods determine whether the independent variable is statistically significant. Explain how you determined this. c) Interpret the unstandardized regression equation, intercept and slope. d) Interpret the standardized regression coefficients (Beta) and the R-square statistic. e) Predict the level of authoritarianism for the following partisan identifiers: weak Democrats: Independents and, strong Republicans.

Explanation / Answer

Part-a

From regression table we observe that coefficient of partyid political party affiliation is significant with p=0.004<0.05

Hence, results are significant and corresponding to unit increase in partyid political party affiliation from democratic to republican there is 0.105 increase in authoritatariranism scale.

Part-b

Degree of freedom =n-2=618-2=616

Critical t(0.05,616)=1.96

Independent variable is signfcant at test statistic t=2.927>1.96

Also p-value=0.004<005 so independent variable is significant.

95% confidence interval =0.105-1.96*0.036 , 0.105+1.96*0.036

=(0.0344               0.1756)

As confidence interval does not includes zero, so independent variable is significant

Part-c

Regression equation is

Auth Scale= 2.317 + 0.105 * Partid

Intercept is the average scale when partyid=0, that is for strongly democratic people

Slope=0.105 which means that corresponding to unit increase in republican level there is on an average an increase of 0.105 in Auth scale

Part-d

R-sqaure is 0.013 which means that partyid explained only 1.3%variabilitiy in auth scale

Standardized beta=0.116 which means that corresponding o 1 standard deviation increase in republican partyid there is 0.116 standard deviations increase in auth scale.

Part-e

For weak democrats partyid=1 , so Auth Scale= 2.317 + 0.105 * 1=2.422

For independents partyid=3 Auth Scale= 2.317 + 0.105 * 3 = 2.632

For strong repubilcans partyid=6 Auth Scale= 2.317 + 0.105 * 6=2.947
