Question

Please Help with Variance

In your professional careers, you will often be given a set of data and asked to analyze it to answer an important biological question. However, there are times when you can't just run an ANOVA on a dataset without thinking about what you are doing. For example, look at the following plot for mean Chl a density. An assumption for the ANOVA (that we haven't talked about) is that the variance is the same between all sites. Based on this plot, would you say this assumption is met a. Yes b. No

Explanation / Answer

This assumption is not met. As we see, the error bars for first 3 observations are very wide while those for last three are very narrow.

Hence, variance is not same.
