Question

Tool workers are subject to work-related injuries. One disorder, caused by strains to the hands and wrists, is called carpal tunnel syndrome. It strikes as many as 23,000 workers per year. It is estimated that the average cost of this disorder to employers and insurers is approximately $30,000 per injured worker. Suppose these costs are normally distributed, with a standard deviation of $9,000.
(a) What proportion of the costs are between $16,000 and $42,000?dard deviation of $9,000.
(b) What proportion of the costs are greater than $45,000?
(c) Suppose 10 workers affected by carpal tunnel syndrome are randomly selected, what’s the likelihood that their average medical cost is less than $35,000?

I already found how to answer these questions manually. But I would like to know how to answer these through minitab step by step so I can check my answers if they are correct. I already know how to do a and b. How do you do part c through minitab?

Explanation / Answer

In MINITAB go to Calc -> Random Data -> Normal.

Make the following entries there:

Number of rows of data to generate : 10.

Store in Column: Give a particular column.

Mean: 30000.

Standard deviation: 9000.

You will get 10 rows of data from N(30000,9000^2) in a particular column.

No check how many of those observations are less than 35000. Let that number be x.

Hence the required likelihood = x / n. (Ans).
