Question

In a study designed to test the effectiveness of acupuncture for treating migraine, 100 patients were randomly selected and treated with acupuncture. After one-month treatment, the number of migraine attacks for the group had a mean of 2 and standard deviation of 1.5. Construct a 90% confidence interval estimate of the mean number of migraine attacks for people treated with acupuncture. Show all work. Just the answer, without supporting work, will receive no credit. (Please do not use excel or online calculators - show all work!)

Explanation / Answer

as nothing have been said we consider the no of migrain attacks follow normal distribution.

where sample mean = 2.

sample sd =1.5

and no of observations =n.=100

our level of significance =alpha= 0.1

now the formula for normal distribution's mean's CI

is

Confidence interval = sample mean +/- (t(, N-1)*SEM)

where SEM = S/n , S=sample SD

S/N = 0.15

t(, N-1) = 1.66 (got from t-table)

so, putting all the values in the formula

Lower bound: 1.75

Upper bound: 2.25
