Consider the scenario where you are attending an important discussion. You are interested in the discussion and want to actively participate with your views regarding the subject. But while discussing you makes gestures like gazing at something, fiddling with pen, talking in very low volume, giving unnecessary stress to certain words and maintain little eye contact. These nonverbal actions show that you are not interested in the discussion though actually you are actively participating in your own way. The members may get annoyed by your actions.
While communicating we should align our nonverbal expressions with the verbal language to make the communication effective and meaningful. The facial expressions play an important role in communication. The facial expression should be able to express our mood which will help the audience to understand the verbal communication as intended. Non verbal communication does not use words like verbal communication and the main signals that we use to communicate using nonverbal communication includes gestures, the volume, pitch, eye contact, body posture etc. When the nonverbal communication does not support what is said verbally, the listener gets confused about the meaning of the message.
In the scenario when you make your verbal communication in very low voice with long pause between sentences, the listeners feel that you do not want to express your views. The volume and pitch have great impact on making the communication effective. If you speak in a rough manner and pronounce the words giving unnecessary stress the listeners get wrong message that you are participating in the discussion out of compulsion and is waiting for the meeting to conclude. Hence you should be very careful with your nonverbal actions while speaking to deliver the message with the correct meaning to the audience.
