Question
Assume that you are the sales manager at a European company that makes sleepwear products for children. Company personnel discovers that the chemicals used to flameproof the company’s line of children’s pajamas might cause cancer if absorbed through the skin. After this discovery, the pajamas are banned from sale in the European Union and the United States, but senior executives of your company learn that the children’s pajamas in inventory and the remaining flameproof material can be sold to sleepwear distributors in certain East European countries where there are no restrictions against the material’s use. Your superiors instruct you to make the necessary arrangements to sell the inventories of banned pajamas and flameproof materials to East European distributors. How would you handle this situation?
Explanation / Answer
I could handle this situation by refusing my seniors' request to sell the banned sleepwear in certain East European countries. Because i feel this will be a wrong decision if i support my senior executives. Many employees may get scared of loosing their job if they do not follow their senior executives order. But i like to take the right decision whatever the situation may be. In this case, although i am in pressure i would like to take right ethical decision. For this act i may be terminated from my job. But this will not change my decision. It will be indecent to play with the health of innocent children who are our future. Chemicals are always proved as dangerous for our skin. By knowing this how can i commit such a big mistake? I will explain my point of view to my senior executives for the last time, if they agree with me then everything will be well. Otherwise i have to left my job looking for a better alternative.
