Book: Physics for Scientists and Engineers: A Strategic Approach 4th Edition by knight (1.3) The figure below shows a snapshot graph D(x, t-2s) taken at t-2s of a pulse traveling to the left along a string at a speed of 2.Om/s Answer the two questions in the space below. D mm 2 Snapshot at t= 2 s 2.0 m/s 2 when did the wave pulse arrive at x_8m? Explain (a) Tell me as much information as you can about the wave pulse as it passes through x=2m location on the string. (If it helps, use the grid on the right to draw a history (b) graph for x=-2m; the history graph will NOT be graded.)

Explanation / Answer

(a) at t=2sec, wave's right most portion is at x=6m(the one below the line)

And speed of wave is 2m/s so it had travelled 2m leftwards in previous second. Therefore at t=1sec, wave's right most portion was at x=8m as this is left moving wave.

(B)

At t=2 sec, wave's left most portion is at approximately x=-5m.

As its speed is 2m/s, it was at x=-2 m , 1.25 second before.
