Question

Please show your work TORISEL (temsirolimus), for use in advanced renal cell carcinoma, is pre- pared for infusion by adding 1.8 mL of special diluent to the drug vial result- ing in 3 mL of injection containing 10 mg/mL of temsirolimus. The required quantity is then added to a 250-mL container of sodium chloride injection for infusion. The recommended dose of temsirolimus is 25 mg infused over 30 to 60 minutes. The quantity of drug delivered, in mg/mL, and the rate of infu- sion, in mL/min, for a 30-minute infusion are:

Explanation / Answer

3ml of injection contain 10mg/ml of temsirolimus. so total amount of temsirolimus in injection=30mg

However recommended dose of temsirolimus is 25 mg . So we would be requiring 2.5 ml of injection ( by unitary method =3*25/30)

it is then added to 250ml of sodium chloride .

therefore total sol.=2.5+250=252.50 ml containing 25mg of temsirolimus drug.

quantity of drug in mg/ml= 25/252.50 =0.099 (approx 0.01 mg/ml)

rate of infusion in ml/min for 30min= 252.50/30= 8.4167 ml/min
