Question

QUIZ 5 Having just graduated you are out looking for a job that has nothing to do with French fries or babysitting the devil's spawn in your neighborhood. Luckily you come across an ad for a job for a geneticist working for Alligator Records. Ex- cited and somewhat confused you apply for the job telling them that you made an A in Genetics Lab at UTSA. Duly impressed they hire you on the spot and give you the choice of two projects In one project you will be given eight frozen mice embryos from which you are expected to derive the five males you will use to recreate the boy band NSYNC. Rodents? Justin Timberlake? Seriously, what's the difference? Anyway the second project involves a genetic rescue. You have six hu- man embryos from a couple that are descendants of the great albino heavy metal Southern rock guitar player Nuclear Winter, and both parents carry the albino trait, which is, of course, recessive. The contract calls for you to pro- duce two albino guitar players. Consider both projects and choose the one that you determine is the most likely to work. Justify your choice. x n-x P.S. You might need this: P= p X (n-X

Explanation / Answer

Probability of getting success in Proeject A is = 8C5 (0.5)5 (0.5)3  = 0.21875

Probability of getting success in Project B is = 6C2 (0.5)6(0.5)2 = 0.0586

(As each embroyes has 1/2 probability of getting male)

so we can see that that project A has higher probability of geting success than Project A so i will choose projet A for working than project B.
