Question

Identify the distribution and provide a symbolic answer or an Excel expression fro each part of the problem.

In a double-blind study, we want to compare two variants of the treatment. The 100 volunteers are assigned a random number from 1 to 10000. Those with numbers 1 to 3500 are placed in the control group, 3501 to 6750 receive treatment 1, and 6751 to 10000 receive treatment 2.

a) Considering only the placement of one patient, what sort of distribution are we looking at? [Two possible answers for this.]

b) What is the probability that the experimenters wind up with 34 participants in the control group, 37 with Treatment 1 and 29 with treatment 2?

Explanation / Answer

a)

There are 3500 numbers that get you in the control, so P(control) = 3500/10000 = 0.35

There are 3250 numbers that get you in treatment 1, so P(treatment 1) = 0.325.

There are 3250 numbers that get you in treatment 2, so P(treatment 2) = 0.325.

b) By using result of part a, the probability that the experimenters wind up with 34 participants in the control group, 37 with Treatment 1 and 29 with treatment 2 is:

=(0.35)34 (0.325)37 (0.325)29
