Question #7 (10 pts.) Do not write your answer on this sheet. Begin your solution on a new page in your examinat book.) ion Suppose that you have the following A/D converters available to you: a- An 8-bit flash A/D converter, 1 GSPS (billion samples per second) maximum sampling. b- A 12-bit successive approximation A/D converter, 50 KSPS maximum c- 10-bit flash converter, 1MSPS sampling frequency, d- 26-bit quad slope A/D converter, 10 SPS maximum sampling rate, e-V/F converter, 0Hz-100 KHz output range for 0-10 V input range with an accuracy of 0.01%, frequency Which A/D converter would you use for each of the following applications? Write a sentence or two to justify your decision. a- Measuring the shock wave characteristics of various types of conventional or nuclear explosions, b-7 ½ decimal digits, ultra-high precision digital voltmeter, c- Measuring sensor inputs in a fly-by-wire jet airplane, d- Medium performance digital audio system, e- Controlling the temperature of a 50 ton capacity electric are steel-making furnace in a foundry,Explanation / Answer
A. 10-bit flash converter with 1 MSPS sampling frequency is used for measuring the shock wave characteristics of conventional or nuclear explosions because of their fully differntial input stage has a bandwidth range of 400MHz.This type of Flash ADC is optimized for low power and high dynamic performances in measuring equipments for a larger distances.
B. 26-bit quad slope A/D converter with 10 SPS maximum sampling rate is used for ultra-high precision digital voltmeter of 7 1/2 decimal digits because quad slope A/D convrters are designed to get High precision, Low speed output which is well suitable for high accurate digital applications.
C. An 8-bit flash ADC with 1 GSPS maximum sampling frequency is used for a measuring sensor inputs in a fly-by-wire jet airplane because the input signals for a jet airplane should be received at a high speed and also with high accuracy, both of them can be attained using 8-bitt flash converter which provides metastable performance for least number of Errors.
D.V/F converter with 0Hz-100 KHz output range for 0-10 V input range with an accuracy of 0.01% is used for digital audio systems because the low input voltage received is an analog signal converted into into a digital output of frequency nearly 100KHz, is a suitable range for medium performance digital audio systems.
E. A 12-bit successive approximation A/D converter is used for controlling the temperature of a 50 ton capacity arc steel making furnace because with a 50 KSPS maximum sampling frequency it is sufficient for controlling the temperature for every successive interval without a delay in a successive approximation ADC(Analog to Digital Converter).
