Question

An epidemiologic investigation begun on January 1st, 2009 identified a population of 1,000 individuals among whom 4 were found to have the disease under study on this date. During the year of the study, 6 additional new cases were found. Among the total of 10 cases, there were 6 deaths during the year. For the 10 cases, the diagram indicates the time of case recognition, periods of observation during the study, and vital status at the time of the termination of observation. A vertical bar at the start of the diagram (patients 1,2,3,4) indicates that the start of disease had occurred before the study began. Assume that the 990 remaining individuals in the study did not become ill or die during the year of observation. What is the incidence density of the disease for 2009 (per 100,000) 2009 2010 6 7 9 10 |-illness Prior to study illness-= illness t-Death 0 50 0 4.5 0 5 0 49

Explanation / Answer

Ans = 50.

Because,

We want to fined Incidence density for deaths in 2009

For 10 sample,

Since N = 10

No. of new deaths in year is 6

I.e. n = 6

The time period in 2009 is 12 months

Incidence Density = (No. of new deaths / Sum of time period)

= 6 / 12

= 0.5

This is for 1000 people in 12 months But we required for 100000 people so multiplyed by 100.

Since, Incidence Density = 0.5 * 100

= 50
