Explanation / Answer

1a. Assembly line is a type of manufacturing process where a semi finished product moves from one workstation to another. At each workstation, a standard process on the semi-finished product is conducted to make it one step closer to becoming a finished product.

Assembly line production is important for mass production of goods that require different type of labor and resources. Assembly line facilitates such production as the process becomes quick and cost-effective. Also efficient utilization of resources is ensured as the semi-finished assembly flows in the assembly line.

1b. Production of a uniform product having standard features is facilitated with the use of assembly line. For example: production of standard one flavored cakes goes through an assembly line where step by step, an enhancement is done on the semi finished product. Standardization is maintained throughout the process, which gets facilitated by the assembly line process. The outcome of this process is many cakes with same flavor set, size, color, smell, etc.

1c. Production of a customized product having features as per customer requirements is not facilitated with the use of assembly line. For example: production of furniture where each customer gives a customized order of sixe, shape, color, upholstery fabric, etc. No standardization of processes is maintained in this production and so assembly line is ineffective in this case.
