Question

Please explain if possible thanks in advance In an experiment to estimate the acceleration due to gravity, a student drops a ball at a distance of 1m above the floor. His Iab partner measure the time it takes to fall and obtain an estimate of 0.46 s. (a) What do they estimate the acceleration due to gravity to be? (b) Let s be the ball's position relative to the floor. Using the value the acceleration due to gravity that they obtained, and assuming that the ball is released at t=0, determine s (in m) as a function of time.

Explanation / Answer

a)

H = H0 + V0*t - 1/2*gt^2

H0 --> initial height = 1 meter
V0 --> initial velocity, since it is at rest, v0 = 0
g --> to be found
t = time = 0.46

Plugging in :

0 = 1 + 0*(0.46) - (1/2)*g(0.46)^2

0 = 1 - 0.1058g

-1 = -0.1058g

g = 1 / 0.1058

g = 9.4517958 meter/second^2

------------------------------------------------------

s = H0 + V0*t - 1/2*gt^2

s = 1 + 0*t -(1/2)(9.4517958)t^2

s = 1 - 4.7258979t^2 ---> ANSWER
